James L. Orwin began working as an ICT Project Officer for East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) in the UK in March 2018. In April 2022, the Council’s Chief Executive, Caroline Lacey, circulated an email inviting all colleagues to add pronouns to their email footers ‘should you wish to do so’, effectively a policy of gender self-identification. To highlight the hypocrisy of the Council’s policy and assert his gender-critical beliefs, James Orwin chose to add ‘XYchromosomeGuy/AdultHumanMale’ as his footer. He was later dismissed and ultimately raised a discrimination claim against the Authority in the UK Employment Tribunal. The 3-day hearing took place in Hull Combined Courts Centre at the end of May 2024. This memoir was inspired by the author’s experience of his former employer’s policies and processes, and the UK’s Employment Tribunal and legal system.

A memoir, written as a matter of public interest: relevant to ERYC’s current and future employees, elected Council members, residents and council tax payers, as well as the general public, particularly those for whom ERYC bears significant safeguarding responsibilities. But the author is also mindful of the broader implications of the most egregious tenet of gender identity ideology: self-identification.

In this book, the author also examines the inherent bias towards gender ideology in the Equal Treatment Bench Book, the Judicial College’s guide for British judges; and briefly addresses the incoherent ruling of the 16 April 2025 UK Supreme Court judgement in the case of For Women Scotland Ltd. vs The Scottish Ministers.
